Collaborating with Local Communities, Creating Countywide Impact
Orange County United Way convened county, city and educational leaders at Angel Stadium on Friday, March 7 during the inaugural Orange County Visionary Leaders' Conference. The purpose of the conference was to discuss the ten-year goals laid out in United Way's FACE 2024 program, addressing the many education, income, health and housing challenges facing local residents. During the event, attendees discussed ways to work together to tackle these challenges in order to make a significant, long-term impact on our community.
Keynote speaker at the conference was Mark Kramer, co-founder of Foundation Strategies Group, (FSG) and co-author of the socially significant article, "Collective Impact," published by the Stanford Social Innovation Review. Kramer identified several successful, well-tested strategies that can be applied by Orange County cities and school districts working together to address the human service needs of its residents.
During the afternoon, conference attendees particpated in four breakout discussions representing teh four key FACE 2024 issues. The conference reconvened weith reports from the breakout sessions that included recommended strategies to achieve the goals of FACE 2024 and key action steps.
The conference was co-hosted by United Way, the Association of California Cities-Orange County and Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer in partnership with Supervisor Janet Nguyen, Supervisor John Moorlach and Supervisor Patricia Bates.
Honorary co-chairs of the event were Julie Miller-Phipps of Kaiser Permanente, Susan Samueli of the Samueli Foundation and Anaheim Ducks, and Arte Moreno, owner of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
At the end of the conference, it was announced that a smaller task force will be convened, with participants representing the County of Orange, United Way, Association of California Cities - Orange County as well as representatives from the business community, in order to determine next steps in applying many of the concepts discussed during the session.
