Do you remember your first interview? Did you feel confident walking in? Did you get the job? Professional skills that prepare students for the workforce are often overlooked in school curriculums. Thankfully, career readiness programs are actively filling those educational gaps in Orange County.
For many students, the path after high school is filled with unknowns. But for first-generation college students, that path can feel even more uncertain—shaped by responsibility, sacrifice, and the pressure to succeed not just for themselves, but for their families.
For Luis, a 12th-grader at Anaheim High School, participating in the Disney Speaker Series—our innovative career readiness program in collaboration with the Disneyland Resort—became a defining experience that transformed uncertainty into confidence, and possibility into action.
A Future Once Uncertain
Not long ago, college didn’t feel guaranteed.
“My freshman year, I didn’t think I’d go to college,” Luis shared. “I thought I’d have to go right to work.”
That reality is one many local students face. Fortunately, through the encouragement of a teacher, the influence of peers, and the support of his community, Luis took a chance on something new: the Disney Speaker Series.
What he found was more than a program—it was a turning point.
Real-World Preparation That Builds Confidence
Through hands-on experiences like mock interviews, resume reviews, and career skills workshops, Luis began to understand what it truly means to step into a professional environment.
“It showed me where I am—and what I need to work on,” he said.
Before participating the program, interviews felt like an unknown. Now, they feel manageable.
“Now I’m definitely more prepared for real work situations.”
That shift—from uncertainty to confidence—is exactly what strong career readiness programs are designed to build.
Expanding Possibilities
Growing up, Luis always knew he wanted to work with others. But like many young people, his vision for the future started out narrow.
Through exposure to professionals and real-life career journeys, that perspective changed.
Luis began exploring paths like accounting and law—careers that combine analytical thinking with meaningful human impact.
“This experience gave me a lot of insight on how to approach a job,” said Luis. “Work isn’t one narrow path. Everyone has a path that can provide fulfillment.”
That mindset is exactly what the Disney Speaker Series helped reinforce and why career readiness programs can be incredibly powerful for students.
A Milestone for an Entire Family
This fall, Luis will attend the University of California, Berkeley on a full-ride scholarship, majoring in business administration.
He will be the first in his family to go to college.
“It’s a big accomplishment for me and my family,” Luis shared. “I’m doing it for myself, but also for them.”
Luis’ journey represents more than personal success—it’s a step forward for their entire family.
“I want to show my younger sister that no one is limited.”
His Foundation
Luis’ mom has been his constant. While navigating her own path without the resources or support many take for granted, she simultaneously managed to build a family and instill in her son a lesson no program can teach: the belief that showing up matters.
“If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be here,” Luis reflects.
She didn’t sacrifice so Luis could succeed. She built something and he’s carrying it forward.
Looking Ahead
As Luis prepares for college, he is most excited about growth.
“I’m looking forward to learning more about myself… being on my own… meeting new people,” he said.
Luis describes himself as process-oriented—someone who values understanding how to do things well, not just getting them done.
His long-term goals are grounded and meaningful:
Find work that brings fulfillment.
Potentially become a business lawyer.
Build a family and create a life centered on happiness by “just taking life one day at a time.”
Lifelong Lessons
A huge strength behind the success of the Disney Speaker Series career readiness program is the speakers themselves. Students hear real-life examples of people who have built meaningful, fulfilling careers.
“I learned not be afraid to make mistakes—that’s the only way to learn,” said Luis. “If you put yourself out there, you’ll gain more than you expect.”
Why This Matters
Stories like this are made possible through investment—in students, in innovation, and in opportunity.
For donors, your support fuels programs that provide real-world experiences, build confidence, and open doors that once felt closed.
For corporate partners, your involvement brings careers to life—helping students connect their ambitions to tangible possibilities.
Together, we are helping students answer one of life’s biggest questions:
What’s possible for me?
Opening Doors for the Next Generation
Luis’ story is just one example—but it reflects something much bigger.
When students are given the chance to explore, practice, and grow, they don’t just prepare for the future—they begin to believe in it.
And that belief can change everything.
A special thank you to Disneyland Resort for their collaboration and support!
