Important to Remember

  • The new law restores the original provisions of the Affordable Care Act and requires California tax-filers, whose health care costs do not exceed a certain percentage of their income, to have health coverage or pay a penalty.  For more information, please see the State Subsidy and Individual Mandate Fact Sheet – Covered California’s quick guide for enrollers, including FAQ.
  • Subsidies for health insurance coverage purchased through Covered California are not included in the new public charge policy released by the Federal Government in August 2019. Please see the California Health and Human Services Agency’s Public Charge Guide for further information.
    • NOTE: Immigration issues are complicated and family-specific, so Covered California encourages anyone with questions about Public Charge to contact an immigration or public benefits attorney.
  • Health insurance coverage for all children has been extended to age 26.

Success Stories

The value of health care is evident daily at United Way. One recent enrollee, Masako was eight months pregnant and awaiting the birth of her second child when we met her. On top of the usual concerns any couple has when they’re expecting, Masako was near tears as she considered her family’s tenuous coverage situation. Her husband had employee-only health insurance through his employer but the family plan was unaffordable. With her due date fast approaching, Orange County United Way helped her enroll in a plan that was right for her and her family.

Maria Success Story United Way

As a cancer survivor, now I am able to purchase insurance through Covered California and don’t have to pay those high premiums due to a pre-existing condition.
