Orange County’s United to End Homelessness group is pushing to house 30 homeless households by the end of August in an effort that could lead to up to 300 new vouchers for subsidies from the federal government.

The “House 30 by August 30” campaign could strengthen Santa Ana’s application for more vouchers with the Department of Housing and Urban Development by showing it is effective at using the vouchers it already received. That is a significant part of the criteria HUD will use to evaluate applications from cities around the country.

United to End Homelessness leaders announced in a meeting Wednesday, Aug. 21, they had secured funding for 21 of the 30 households that have vouchers from the Santa Ana Housing Authority with a little more than a week to go in the campaign.

The group’s WelcomeHomeOC program uses a cost of $16,670 per household to not only get families housed but to put them in a position to succeed and remain in housing. It had raised more than $350,000 through Wednesday’s meeting at Orange County United Way headquarters in Irvine.
