2015 Day of Caring Unites Volunteers to Give Back

On Saturday, August 22, volunteers from across the County joined hands to help transform our community through the power of volunteerism at our 2015 Day of Caring.

More than 80 volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help support our work to ensure everyone has access to a quality education, a sustainable income, good health and stable housing—the building blocks for a self-sufficient life. Ranging from reading stations and physical activity with local youth, to food preparation, organizing donated furniture, and planting a community garden, volunteers demonstrated the power of caring through their impact. The group was divided into four locations, where volunteers headed out on elementary school buses to United Way partners Latino Health Access, Serving Kids Hope, Second Harvest/Families Forward, and to Stanton for a garden groundbreaking.

“We’re pleased that so many people had the opportunity to get a bird eye’s view of the needs in Orange County,” explained Bill Vaughn, United Way’s Senior Director, Development. “Many of the participants may not have ventured into other communities where far too many children, families and individuals face significant challenges. By developing a greater understanding of these barriers and supporting key initiatives like creating green spaces, enjoying fun physical activities and organizing deliveries of essential items, it was empowering to know that just a few hours of volunteering can improve local lives.”
