Orange County is a great place to live and work. While many of us feel fortunate to live here, the scope of serious issues facing far too many of our local children and families may surprise you.

Hidden from our daily view is an undercurrent of constant hardship pulling at their heels. These are hard-working, people simply trying to survive, trying to find a way to get ahead in life.

It’s at-risk youth unable to obtain a solid education, where being able to graduate high school on-time and be ready for good jobs can seem way out of reach.

It’s our local kids who need to live healthier lifestyles, to be more active, eat better, or even just to be read to regularly by their parents.

It’s families doubling up in motels, working overtime trying to attain permanent housing and financial stability.

Education, Income, Health & Housing—these are all challenges playing out daily behind the social curtain in Orange County, affecting the future of our community.

The good news is these challenges are reversible—but not without help.

Since 1924, Orange County United Way has been working to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of Orange County to strengthen our community. Our primary objective is to ensure that every child has the opportunity for a good life. It’s a win/win—good for our children and a smart investment for the community.

How We’re Addressing The Challenges

In 2014, Orange County United Way launched FACE 2024, a 10-year collaborative, communitywide action plan to create a positive future for the next generation. Working as a united community around the FACE 2024 goals, we will:

Cut the high school dropout rate in half

Reduce the percentage of financially unstable families by twenty-five percent

Increase the number of healthy youth, as measured by childhood obesity rates, by one-third

Cut the percentage of homeless and housing-insecure children in half

As long as we FACE the future together, we can reset the course for our children and rewrite the future. We’re going to ensure the next generation thrives through these four key fundamentals:
